Rosalie Littell Colie (1924-1972), prématurément disparue dans un accident tragique, après avoir enseigné à Columbia, Oxford, Yale et Toronto, fut professeur de littérature anglaise et comparée à Brown University (Providence). C’est la lecture, il y a une quin- zaine d’années, de son maître livre, tout d’érudition maîtrisée, Paradoxa Epidemica: The Renaissance Tradition of Paradox (Prince- ton UP, 1966), qui nous a fait découvrir, parmi ses publications posthumes, ce recueil de poèmes. Nous nous étions promis d’y revenir. Grâce à l’attention du tradcuteur, voilà chose faite. (NDLR)
Farmstead.
Back in the Catskill woods,
back where I had not walked before, there
I came upon a fieldstone square,
The cellar of a quite-gone homestead.
By it a thickened gardenbed
Of rough fieldflowers fed
From farmer’s old manured ground
To bloom a little bigger round—
Nickel to quartersize—and crowned
With beebalm still imperial,
Still breathing spice and gathering all
Sugar-seekers into thrall.
They come, the sugar-seekers, here:
Wasps, bees, yellowjackets;sheer
And shining unbelief, that queer
Hatching of emerald balancings,
Needlebeak and fizzing wings,
The hummingbird, who never sings.
Spikes of spice and wasps and bird
Said nothing, but the silence whirred,
Air buzzed, wings stirred to sounds I heard.
